What does Gartner predict about cybersecurity in its 2024 Hype Cycle?

Gartner just released its 2024 edition of Hype Cycle, and one of the main themes was Human-centric security. What is the Gartner Hype cycle about? What does it mean for those looking to get into the world of cybersecurity?

Let us explore

A quick overview of the Gartner’s Hype Cycle

The hype cycle is a term coined by Gartner in 1995.

It tells how, for a specific timeline, a particular technology is doing and will do in aspects like adoption, usage, etc.

It shows whether a technology is on track for mainstream and productive use. It helps experts with budgeting, investing, and forecasting. For example, it can tell whether a technology will be hyped a lot or it will reach a limit where its investors report low ROI.

It is categorized into five stages spread out over a timeline:

The innovation trigger

Technologies at these stages will get people to start talking. It is the starting point of innovations and technological breakthroughs.

The peak of inflated expectations

It is a stage when people increase their usage of technology. And the hype of the technology is more than any proof that it can deliver what it is hyped for.

The trough of disillusionment

This is the point where people start losing excitement about the technology, and people who have invested initially in the technology start facing ROI and performance issues, etc.

The slope of enlightenment

People begin to adapt the technology in a way that is beneficial to their organization by understanding how it could be beneficial to them.

The plateau of productivity

It is the point where the technology becomes mainstream, with many people using and understanding its benefits and use cases.

What does the Gartner Hype cycle mean 2024 for cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity lies in the innovation trigger stage of the Gartner hype cycle, meaning that more people will get excited about cybersecurity and look to augment security.

It will mean, for the next ten years at least, the cybersecurity industry will grow and create massive hype among customers. It shows that 2024 is a good time to invest in cybersecurity.

With cybersecurity growing with a CAGR of 12.63% (Mordor intelligence) for 2024-2029, organizations from other industries, especially MSPs, must look to make the most of this opportunity to diversify into cybersecurity.

The following are the key takeaways for cybersecurity from the Garter hype cycle:

  • Organizations will be focusing on creating a culture that is fundamentally based on security and privacy, making way for increased resilience against threats.
  • They will improve their transparency among customers and try to become more accountable by implementing privacy measures.
  • There will be an improved focus on improving user experience, and they will be looking for ways to gain increased threat behavior-specific insights.
  • There will be increased adoption of a digital immune culture, which involves proactively building a cybersecurity posture through preemptive identification and response to threats.
  • AI and ML will be critical in providing decentralized, easily available security insights across the infrastructure.

As per Gartner, with the rising attack surfaces due to the increased adoption of cloud and digital environments, security-related tasks will become challenging with human errors and limited visibility.

Gartner emphasized that there is a need for human-centric security and organizations need to address human awareness gaps with employees knowing the purpose of security controls to individually ensure security.
