CVE-2026-64638: WordPress Pre-Authentication XSS Vulnerability

On August 11th 2026, Adobe released its August 2026 update for Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source, addressing multiple critical, important, and moderate vulnerabilities.
These vulnerabilities include security feature bypass, arbitrary code execution, and privilege escalation vulnerabilities.
Through the blog, we will understand what vulnerabilities are about, the threats posed by them, along with some security recommendations that organizations can use to defend against the threats.

Threats posed by vulnerability
By exploiting the vulnerability, an attacker can:
- Execute a malicious JavaScript in the victim’s browser.
- Abuse logged-in Administrator’s browser session to further an attack with admin privileges
- Carry out more serious attacks, like privileged account abuse and potential remote code execution by chaining with other flaws or functionalities.
- Create unauthorized administrator accounts or modify user privileges and content.
- Create an application password.
- Gain authenticated REST API access using newly created credentials.
- Access sensitive WordPress configuration data, including credentials stored in `wp-config.php.`
- Upload a malicious plugin or other PHP code and remotely execute malicious code on the WordPress server.
- Establish a mechanism for persistent access.
- Cause a compromise of the website/server.
Official mitigation guide
WordPress has addressed this and other vulnerabilities via WordPress 7.0.3 and has recommended that users immediately update to this version. The following is the recommended remediation:
- Update WordPress Core to 7.0.3 or the applicable security-fixed release.
- Ensure WordPress installations receiving automatic background updates have successfully completed the update.
- Verify the installed WordPress version across all production websites.
- Pay particular attention to externally accessible WordPress login pages.
- Do not treat existing WordPress hardening measures as a replacement for applying the security update.
- Sites running versions older than 4.7 should be treated as requiring remediation because the current backport range does not extend to those versions.

- Prioritize upgrading affected WordPress Core installations to the applicable security-fixed release.
- Identify all externally accessible WordPress installations and verify their current Core versions.
- Review WordPress sites that were running affected versions, particularly **7.0.2**, for signs of unexpected administrative activity.
- Review for newly created Application Passwords, unexpected administrator accounts, unauthorized plugin uploads, and unexplained content changes where applicable.
- Monitor for suspicious activity involving WordPress login endpoints and administrative sessions.
- Review web-server and WordPress logs for unusual failed-login activity followed by unexpected administrative actions.
- Do not rely solely on Content Security Policy or other hardening controls as a mitigation for this vulnerability. Apply the vendor-provided security update.
- Maintain WordPress Core on a supported and security-maintained release.
